Back in secondary school, Science Students are known to be Generally Good at Mathematics while Social Science students are usually not pretty sound when it comes to Maths. But for Art students, we believe “they don’t know their right from left in mathematics”.
However, Jamb doesn’t bother whether you are a pure science or social science student. The standard of Jamb Mathematics Questions is the same for every Mathematics candidate. It implies that you will answer the same with those going for Engineering courses.
This brings us to the question, how do I study and pass maths in Jamb 2024 as a social science student? All you need is a change of mindset, constant practice and past questions. This and many more will I teach you in this article.

If you are someone who completely hates mathematics, I highly recommended that you Check here for how to fall in love with Mathematics before proceeding. On the other hand, if you don’t hate mathematics but still struggling to be good at the subject, continue reading.
The following steps should help you prepare and pass Mathematics very well as a social science student preparing for Jamb…
Get Recommended Books and Syllabus
Not all textbooks are worth reading for Jamb. Certain books are recommended. You may want to click here to see Jamb recommended books for mathematics.
You must not buy the books listed. If you are okay with your current mathematics textbook, then stick to it.
A whole lot of persons think Jamb syllabus is too much to cover. But in reality, it is not. The syllabus serves as a guide to you. For example, Jamb Mathematics syllabus is divided into five sections:
- Number and Numeration.
- Algebra
- Geometry/Trigonometry.
- Calculus
- Statistics
The other stories in the syllabus are to tell you what and what not to cover under each section. Not following the syllabus will make you read out of point.
Your maths textbook covers the inverse of 3 X 3 Matrix, however, Jamb recommends you to stop at inverse of 2 X 2 matrices. This will help you save the time of “reading spoil”.

Get Someone To Boost Your Interest
There is always that person around you who is very good at Mathematics. Instead of just admiring him/her, meet them to get impacted. Don’t let them go unless you love, understand and pass mathematics.
Many intelligent students have habits you may not like. Don’t be easily turned off by their behaviour. Learn as many mathematics topics as possible from them. You are free to dump him/her after the exam (lol).
Study Along With Past Questions
The importance of Jamb past questions cannot be overemphasized. Answer as many questions as possible after studying each topic. Past questions and answers make you know what Jamb require of you. Past questions will also help you examine your level of preparedness for Jamb CBT.
Finally, past questions will make it easier to remember what you have studied.
I highly recommend the flashlearners Jamb application. With FlashLearners Jamb CBT App, you can choose any topic to study and Watch Free Jamb Videos. Check here for more information and to activate the Flashlearner App.

Use Your Pen And Paper
Mathematics is not to be read like a novel. You must be with your calculator, pen, jotter and solving/rough note. Practice every question until you are able to solve them without spying on answers. You should be able to solve on more than two 80 leaves notebook before Jamb exam date.
Give Tutorial Centre A Chance
A Tutorial centre will not read for you or open your brain and put the book inside. However, it will ginger and boost your appetite for reading. Attending tutorials will make it easier for you to understand certain difficult topics in maths.
You may be asking, should I still attend a lecture centre even while I am still in secondary school? Yes, you should. You may want to check out my article on that here.
Do A Constant Practice
Leave mathematics for two weeks and it will leave you for two months.
Since you are struggling with the jamb maths, your best bet is to study mathematics as often as possible. With constant practice, maths will be part of you. Consequently, your high score is sure.
It is true that some mathematics topic will give you issue; Don’t skip such topics. Take note of them and meet someone for an explanation (when you have the opportunity).
Other steps you should take to pass mathematics in Jamb as a Social Science student are:
- Study mathematics more when the weather is not harsh
- Don’t study more than one topic at once (unless it doesn’t affect you)
- Don’t skip any question until you perfectly understand it
- Follow what works best for you.
