This article aims at discussing perishable foods and to give examples of such foods. We know that foods are nutritious substances that living things consume to provide nutritional support. So, these foods are classified into perishable and non-perishable.

In this post we would be looking at Perishable Food: Meaning And 10 Examples.

Meaning of Perishable Foods

These are food that spoils or decay faster, thereby becoming unsafe for human or animal consumption.  Also, if this food is not well refrigerated i.e. are not kept refrigerated at 40 °F or below or frozen at 0 °F or below, it decays easily.

All foods tend to perish, but the time they decay or spoil differs. The time it takes perishable food to spoil is faster when compared to a non-perishable food item i.e. the decaying process happens very quickly.

There are factors responsible for food spoiling quickly. The external factors also greatly impact the time a food product takes to start decaying. These factors include temperature, air pressure, and gases that surround the food. Pathogenic bacteria are one of the bacterias that stay on food and causes it to decay. These bacteria cause food to deteriorate and develop unpleasant odors, tastes, and textures.

10 Examples of Perishable Food

  • Tomatoes
  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Dairy products
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Milk
  • Butter
  • Cottage Cheese
  • All cooked leftovers.

It is important that perishable foods are well refrigerated to slow bacterial growth. This is because refrigeration prevents food from spoilage, prevents loss of food nutrients, and helps the home-makers to save money.

I hope you find this article helpful as well as interesting.
