Level/Field(s) of Study
PhD programs in health research, natural sciences and/or engineering research, and social sciences and/or humanities research (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
As a requirement for program completion, an eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, recital, performance, and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level.
Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) and clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are also suitable if they contain a strong autonomous research component, as indicated above.
Number of Scholarships
The institute awards up to 166 scholarships annually.
Scholarship Value/Duration
The scholarships are valued $50,000 each year and span three years.
Eligibility
To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:
• have a nomination by only one Canadian institution that has received a Vanier CGS quota; and
• be in pursuit of your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research programs such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding:
• plan to undertake full-time doctorate (or a dual graduate program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) study and research at the nominated institution in the summer semester or academic year after the release of results;
• be through with no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2022.
• not have completed more than 32 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by 1 May 2022 if you are enrolled in a joint graduate research program, such as MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD. Applicants in this category have access to the 32-month window regardless of whether they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program; or accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s program); or accelerated from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without first obtaining a Master’s degree.
• have earned a first-class grade point average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution for its definition of a first-class average; and
• not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship/fellowship from NSERC, CIHR, or SSHRC to undertake or conclude a doctoral degree.
Application Instructions
Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution that has a quota for the program in which they wish to study. Candidates cannot apply to the Vanier CGS program directly.
There are two methods to start an application. Either the student tells the graduate studies faculty of the chosen school of their intention to apply to the Vanier CGS program, or the institution begins the nomination procedure by contacting the preferred applicant.
The student prepares the application and submits it to the nominating institution by their internal deadline via the Research Net application system. After that, the nominating institution sends suggested nominees to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by 2 November 2021.
You are expected to visit the official website to access the application form and to gather extensive information on how to apply for this scholarship.
Scholarships in Canada are extremely competitive since they are relatively fewer in number as compared to scholarships provided by other nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The scholarships for international students intending to study in Canada are awarded based on superior academic performance and English proficiency scores. They are also often awarded by colleges without the need for a specific application based on qualifying criteria. However, at other schools, students must apply for the same. Scholarships are often awarded at the entry level, but for certain scholarships, students must demonstrate academic distinction in later years of study as well. All the best in your pursuit.
