There was a considerable number of first school leaving certificate holders following the adoption of free primary education in the old Western Region of Nigeria, of which Bendel State was a part, which began in 1955. Due to a lack of secondary schools and the high school fees imposed, only a small number of these primary school grads were able to continue their education beyond that level at the time. It was based in the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) in Benin City, and its first Provost was Dr. H.S.A Aluyi. His Excellency, Late Professor Ambrose Alli, the Executive Governor of the State, however, officially launched the College on May 5, 1980.
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, IKERE
College of Education, Ikere Ekiti was established initially as the defunct Ondo State College of Education, Ikere Ekiti with an Edict on December 5, 1977, and as the premier institution of the State. The College was primarily conceived as a training centre for teachers of Technical Education. It was also to be unique in the sense that it would principally train Technical and Vocational Education teachers without neglecting academic areas of study. To give respectability and acceptability to its program, the College was affiliated to the then University of Ife. However, it got government approval for the running of the NCE (Primary) Sandwich Programme in 1987, the B.Ed. Sandwich, and B.Ed. Regular Programmes (in affiliation Programme in 1987, the B.Ed. College of Education, Agbor
The College was established in October, 1979 by the former Bendel State Government, to engage in the training of professional teachers; a training that shall lead to the award of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). On Tuesday, 18th August 1981, the Late Professor Ambrose F. Alli, the then Governor of former Bendel State, performed the official opening of the College. With the creation of Edo and Delta States on August, 27th 1991, the College is now owned by the Delta State Government. However, it was this advent of new States’ creation that led to the new Delta State owning her own University a few years after her creation. The said University is located in Abraka. In the year 2006, the College became listed as one of the institutions in the State to function as an External campus to the Delta State University, Abraka.
